It instantly sets things up as dangerous and unpredictable-after all, there's only a thin layer between you and a breathless vacuum. As you awaken from your cryo-chamber aboard the Von Braun, a damaged radar dish careens into a window, causing the cabin to depressurize. The second scene hits immediately after the tutorial and serves to contrast the two environments. It's important that the game begins planet-side, as although the sequence is brief, you catch a glimpse of both a cityscape and the open sky above. The tutorial takes place at a training center on Earth. Two scenes come to mind when I think about how it effectively establishes the game's setting. System Shock 2 wouldn't be the same without its great, inky backdrop. The idea of outer space-a lifeless vacuum where humans don't naturally belong-is a pretty unsettling one. You were stuck on the Von Braun-a great hulk of metal aimlessly drifting in the void with neither a captain nor a pilot. There were no ellipses between levels for you to catch your breath, and there was no escaping the star ship or the corrupting forces on board. Every segment of the Von Braun was believably structured, creating a really fascinating sense of place. There was nothing arbitrary about these levels. It was a virtual tour that had you rummaging through Medical and Science labs, getting lost in Engineering and wandering the Recreational deck. While a lot about its narrative is borrowed from elsewhere, System Shock 2 was unique in allowing you to directly partake in the cosmic horror. His interest in detail which exemplified much of his work can be seen in the detail in the buildings. The tall trees cross this band and cleverly lead us into the buildings behind. Underneath this there is a bright sunstained sky, water and buildings which form a wedge from the left side to form a narrow band in the middle of the left edge. In his painting ‘The Willow Mill’, (1498 or after 1506), there is a grey band of clouds. His watercolours of mountains and river scenery anticipated the art of landscape painting. He was a German painter, printmaker and theorist from Nuremberg. This artistic shift seems to have corresponded to a growing interest in the natural world sparked by the Renaissance.Īlbrecht Durer’s (1471-1528) watercolour landscapes are some of the earliest recordings of the northern Renaissance world. This continued until the 16th century when artists began to view landscapes as a subject in their own right. ‘Landscape’, 1st Century AD, Wall Painting, Villa Albani, RomeĪfter the fall of the Roman Empire the tradition of depicting pure landscapes declined and landscape was seen only as a setting for religious and figural scenes. But, here, even the hellenistic artists did not know the laws of perspective. Everything was charmingly arranged in these pictures, and all the set pieces were looking their best. The Greeks and Romans created wall paintings of landscapes and gardenscapes. Artists have been painting landscapes since Roman times. Apple released iOS 16.5 on May 18, iOS 16.5 includes the following new features: Firstly you are limited to adding up to 20 scenes to the timeline, and any video that is over 10 minutes in length will feature a watermark. As such it should come as no surprise to learn that there are a few limitations – actually just two. There is a free version of Icecream Video Editor, but there is also a Pro version. To make the move from one scene to another more interesting and professional-looking, there are various transition effects to choose from, and these are generally impressiveĬompleted project can be exported to MP4, WEBM or MP3 formats, and you can tweak the quality settings to suit whatever you intend to use the resulting file for. You also have the option of adding plain coloured screens to serve a break between screens, or as backgrounds for text. Text can be added to both images and video, and in the case of images it is possible to add simple animations so that move across the screen slightly rather than remaining static. Video clips can be crops, trimmed and have the audio overdubbed or left untouched. There are various controls that you can use to change colour levels of photos and videos, as well as numerous filters that can be used to achieve a range of special effects. It really can be that simple – but the chances are that you will want to get a little bit more hands on. You can take audio, video and image files that you have stored on your hard drive, add them to the media library ins Icecream Video Editor, and then arrange them on the timeline before exporting to the format of your choice. The process of creating a project is simple enough. It has a simple, accessible interfaces that, while it resemble the basic look of other similar software, remain approachable and intuitive. Video editing tools can be both complicated and expensive, but Icecream Video Editor manages to avoid being either. Plenty of laughs follow as Ling attempts to make mom’s life better by changing events she believes were sources of regret for her mother in the future. Without too many questions being asked by anyone, Ling passes herself off as a distant country cousin Ying has never met, and quickly becomes her new best friend. At this time, Ying is an unmarried factory employee with a heart of gold and a work ethic that embodies what dedicated contribution to collective effort is all about. While tearfully attending her mother’s deathbed, Ling is just as miraculously lifted into the clouds and hurtles back to Earth in 1981, before she was born.īreaking Ling’s fall from the sky is none other than Ying (now played by a radiant Zhang Xiaofei). No sooner has Ling expressed her deep fear of not becoming successful enough to make her mother proud than Ying is fatally injured in a road accident that miraculously leaves Ling unscathed. Surrounded by relatives obsessed with personal wealth, career opportunities and luxury goods, Ling’s painfully aware that such things were out of reach for her mother, Ying (Liu Jia), when she was young and China’s economic reforms had only just begun. Slightly awkward and immediately likable, Ling narrates her story as it begins in 2001. Now 38, Jia plays the autobiographical role of daughter Ling with such sincerity and enthusiasm it hardly matters that she’s twice the character’s age. Expanded from a popular TV comedy sketch Jia performed in 2016, “Hi, Mom” is based on memories of her mother, who passed away when Jia was 19. GCN: Leg warmers over or under your socks? GCN: Would you stop for a coffee on a ride? (Pauses) me? There's other people who descend quickly but I wouldn't be confident going behind them going down, you know? They're a bit sketchy. GCN: Who is the best descender in the pro peleton?
